Colors of Our Life

Color is one of the first things that we could notice about someone or something. Many people think that color is just about “look”, thus, they don’t really care and give enough thought to deeper meanings or the importance of color. As an essential element of life, people, animals and plants use colors for their own purposes.

The first example is that many animals and plants use color as a sign. It seems that color could express the beauty of animals or plants. For example, people often give bright red roses on Valentine’s Day because its red is not just beautiful but also a symbol of a romantic love. On the other hand, many animals use colors as a weapon of defending. For instance, colorful skins on spiders or mushrooms can protect them from dangers from their enemies. People or other animals will not touch these colorful spiders because they know that these spiders are poisonous. In addition, people will avoid eating mushrooms that have a lot of colorful colors.

Another example about the function of color is that people can guess approximately other’s ages. Most teenagers, especially Asian teenagers in Japan, Korea and China, often prefer choosing vibrant clothes for their own styles because these colors such as yellow, orange or red are considered as a symbol of the youth. Using these bright colors will show their dynamic styles, so we can guess their ages; whereas, middle aged people or older people prefer choosing dark colors such as brown or grey for their styles. It’s really rare for us to see someone who is over 60 year old wearing colorful clothes. They don’t want to wear vivid colors because they look really immature for their age.

Another example, warm or bright colors give a feeling of lightness or friendliness. However, it’s hard to answer about what color says to people because colors depend on different people’s appreciations. There are a few accepted traditional opinions or perceptions about colors. For example, in Western cultures, white has meant purity; however, it can also be a symbol of truth, goodness or a new beginning. Black is often related to darkness or an unlucky thing. It is also the traditional color that people often wear at funerals. Red can represent blood, passion, or anger. Yellow represents vibrancy and sunshine while blue is considered to be a calmer color. Green and brown are prime things of the earth and nature.

In conclusion, there is no color that everyone agrees is nice or appealing. You might like blue and others might love red or yellow… however, people should choose the most suitable colors to make them feel more confident.
