Gifts in America and Vietnam

For a long time, people have been using gifts for different purposes. Some people use gifts to share or show off wealth; whereas, others give gifts to offset misfortune. However, the prime purpose is that a gift is not only an expression of love or friendship of givers but also can be an expression of gratitude for a gift received. As a result, in both the USA and Vietnam, giving a gift is an important part of life. Some of their gift customs are very similar, but many are quite different.

First, let us look at some of the things they have in common. The first similarity is that both Vietnamese and American people like to give gifts for special occasions such as births, marriages and special days of the year. Moreover, in the US, people also give presents simply because they feel like it, even when there is no special occasion, and Vietnamese people do this too. For instance, many Vietnamese and American students often receive gifts from their parents when passing an examination. These gifts, such as new laptops, cell phones, and the iPods, are considered worthy rewards and encourage their children to learn better. Finally, in the past, neither America nor Vietnam celebrated Valentine’s Day, but now you will find lovers exchanging flowers and chocolates, which have become a symbol of love, in both countries.

On the other hand, there are some differences between the Americans and the Vietnamese people when giving gifts. In Vietnam, the most important time for exchanging gifts is New Year, but in the US, it is Christmas. The Vietnamese and other East Asian people often give children and exchange each other lucky money, a red pocket, which is expected as a good luck and to avoid evil spirits in the New Year. Unlike Vietnamese people, most of Americans consider Christmas is the most important time of the year to give and exchange gifts each other. Another difference is that American people usually take some gifts, usually food, fruits, a bottle of wine or some flowers when they visit the host’s family. However, Vietnamese people don’t do this. Although the Vietnamese could be happy to accept your offer, they could express that they already had it or don’t need it, so they usually refuse guest’s gifts in the first time or even the second time. Finally, for Vietnamese people, gift giving is an important part of doing business, but in America it is not so important. In fact, many Vietnamese people or companies give gifts, which could be considered as bribery, to others because of individual interest or private benefits.

In conclusion, there is no gift custom that everyone completely agrees will be the best. Some people might like the Vietnamese gift customs and others might like the American gift customs. In my opinion, although Vietnamese and American people come from very different cultures both express their love and respect for others through giving presents.

The Classification Essay

How Safe Are You In Home?

Home is supposed to be a safe place where we can relax after works and feel safer than other places. When we are young, we learn to play and have fun in our home. Unfortunately, thousands of people, especially young children die or are seriously injured in their own homes every year. Thus, home is not completely as safe as everyone thinks. Home’s accidents can be classified into four major kinds of children’s accidents: falls, poisoning, burns, and drowning.

One of the most popular types of children’s accidents at home is falls. Children could suffer injuries from falls. They often fall off tables, high chairs, and downstairs when they are trying to take something without help from their parents. The height of the falls and the hardness of the floor can influence to the seriousness of these injuries. In addition, children could fall because of slipping in the bathroom or on wet floor. In fact, young children should never be left at home alone. They should be supervised at all time when they are climbing on a stair or a high chair.

Another common kind of children’s accidents at home is poisoning. Young children are often curious and like discovering their environment. As a result, these children specially like putting strange things even dirty things, medicines and poisonous chemicals into their mouth because of the carelessness of their parents. Cupboard and drawers should be locked, so children couldn’t have access to medicines, cleaning products or other chemicals.

Burns is also another kind of children’s accidents at home. Hot drinks left on the edge of tables and pants or bowls of hot food such as noodle, which children are trying to make or reach by their little fingers, can result in serious injuries in the kitchen. The best way to protect children from harm is a safety gate or small gate such as a barrier at the kitchen doorway. Moreover, the bathroom is also a dangerous place for burns and scalds because of hot water tap. A good measure is that the temperature of the hot water tap in the bathroom should be controlled, so children will avoid being burnt if they turn it on.

The last kind of children’s accidents at home is drowning. Nowadays, many families, especially in developed countries, have their own swimming pools. However, these swimming pools are dangerous places for children of all ages, who cannot swim. Drowning can occur at these places, so it is a good idea to teach children to swim from an early age. There is also another effective measure to protect children away drowning. According to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pool_fence , all states in Australia and several states, including Florida, California and Arizona, in the US require swimming pools to be fenced around.

In conclusion, these are only a few of the many injuries that can occur to children and even adults in the family home. Accident will probably happen whenever people are careless. The good way is that parents always supervise their children whenever they can.

Nothing Is Impossible

In most Asian countries, passing the exam to apply to University is not really easy for students, who have just graduated from high school. I will never forget my feelings when I passed this exam because it changed my life to a better way.

In high school, I was really a naughty student, so my parents often received complaints from my teachers. My parents tried to change my mind because they were fed up with complaints from others about me. Until the last year in high school, my character really changed significantly. I realized that knowledge was the most important thing that could lead me to a better life in the future. Therefore, I tried to concentrate on my studies and I didn’t waste my time anymore. I registered in 2 universities although no one, except my parents, could believe that I would pass in this exam. However, I didn’t care about that and my parents still believe in my choice. As a result of working hard, I finally got the good result that I and my parents had expected before. Although I just passed one university among two universities, I was very happy. I screamed very loudly after checking my result on the Internet. My parents were also very happy and proud of their son.

Although it was 3 years ago, I have still recalled those feelings. Since then, my life has really changed. I have believed in myself and my ability.

Colors of Our Life

Color is one of the first things that we could notice about someone or something. Many people think that color is just about “look”, thus, they don’t really care and give enough thought to deeper meanings or the importance of color. As an essential element of life, people, animals and plants use colors for their own purposes.

The first example is that many animals and plants use color as a sign. It seems that color could express the beauty of animals or plants. For example, people often give bright red roses on Valentine’s Day because its red is not just beautiful but also a symbol of a romantic love. On the other hand, many animals use colors as a weapon of defending. For instance, colorful skins on spiders or mushrooms can protect them from dangers from their enemies. People or other animals will not touch these colorful spiders because they know that these spiders are poisonous. In addition, people will avoid eating mushrooms that have a lot of colorful colors.

Another example about the function of color is that people can guess approximately other’s ages. Most teenagers, especially Asian teenagers in Japan, Korea and China, often prefer choosing vibrant clothes for their own styles because these colors such as yellow, orange or red are considered as a symbol of the youth. Using these bright colors will show their dynamic styles, so we can guess their ages; whereas, middle aged people or older people prefer choosing dark colors such as brown or grey for their styles. It’s really rare for us to see someone who is over 60 year old wearing colorful clothes. They don’t want to wear vivid colors because they look really immature for their age.

Another example, warm or bright colors give a feeling of lightness or friendliness. However, it’s hard to answer about what color says to people because colors depend on different people’s appreciations. There are a few accepted traditional opinions or perceptions about colors. For example, in Western cultures, white has meant purity; however, it can also be a symbol of truth, goodness or a new beginning. Black is often related to darkness or an unlucky thing. It is also the traditional color that people often wear at funerals. Red can represent blood, passion, or anger. Yellow represents vibrancy and sunshine while blue is considered to be a calmer color. Green and brown are prime things of the earth and nature.

In conclusion, there is no color that everyone agrees is nice or appealing. You might like blue and others might love red or yellow… however, people should choose the most suitable colors to make them feel more confident.

Disneyland… A Great Memory…

I will never forget the first time I visited Disneyland Park in California, one of the most famous parks on the world that most of teenagers and even though elder people like to visit even just one time.

In the early morning of that day, my cousins, whom I had been staying with during one month there, hurried me to awake while I was still sleeping. After having breakfast, we were ready for the trip. We arrived Disneyland at 8 am, so I thought that it were still early to get in. However, there were thousands of people waiting to buy tickets in both Disneyland Park and Disney’s California Adventure Park. After hesitating about which one was more interesting, we finally decided to buy the ticket that we could use in both parks although its price was pretty expensive, about $ 100 for each person. Disneyland Park was really a magic kingdom with a lot of interesting things for all ages from children to elders. One of the most impressive things about Disneyland Park was huge rides. Indoor and outdoor roller coasters created us extreme feelings. Although it was not the first time I tried it, I still felt scared because of that big rides. Before the ride ran, I had trembled at the thought of these big rides, so I had fastened the seat belt carefully and held the handle in the front. My roller coaster was like a fast train. It went up and down very steep slopes and around very sudden bends. I felt dizzy after that; however, it was the strongest feeling that I had never had before. After this first ride, I had more confidence to try other bigger rides there until night.

It was a wonderful day! My dream finally came true; I had a chance to visit Disneyland Park and tried most of big rides there. Although my body was tired after going back home, I was really happy because I had attempted fears. Since that, I have felt more confident and believed that I could solve difficulties in my future in the US.

Narration Essay

A Funny Thing Happened.......

A few years ago, I was going back home after a vacation to visit my grandparents in Hoa Xuan, a little village, which is in the middle of Vietnam. It was an experience that I have still recalled until now.

It was a remote village in a rural area, so the only way to get to the nearest train station was to walk. I was the youngest guy among my local friends, whom I spent most of my time with when I had stayed there. We were not expecting any difficulties, so all of us were surprised to notice that our way was blocked by water. It was really rare for it to rain in the summer, which is always a dry season in my country, so the river should have been dry; however, there had been a flash flood. Fortunately, while we were thinking about how to cross over the river, there were some young guys waiting there with little boats. It was usual not to sit down in these boats, so everyone was expected to stand. My friends soon climbed on board one of the boats while I still hesitated about whether these boats were safe or not. I didn’t want to go because it looked too full to add one more; however, my friends still insisted. Finally, I decided to get on; if not, I would miss the train that I had booked a ticket for before. I was pretty scared, so I held onto the person next to me and I felt that unexpected things would happen. Then the boat sank down although it didn’t turn over. It just slowly went down and all the passengers went down too. Fortunately, the river was not as deep as I thought. We stood on the sand at the bottom of the river and watched the broken pieces of the boat and everyone’s rubber shoes, which were floating around us.

Although I had a little bit of a scare in this accident, it was a funny memory that I couldn’t forget. Since then I have become more careful whenever I have to cross over rivers by small boats.
